First up is the Western Digital 3TB external hard drive and they hold both the first and second place with their WD My Book and WD Elements. And putting any aesthetical considerations to the side there are a few major differences between the two of them in terms of performance. The WD Essential format has been on the market for a long time, although it was holding much lesser hard drives back then and so it only uses a USB 2.0 connection. But on the other hand it does use an old school 7200 RPM 3TB external hard drive and for veterans that always spells out speed and reliability.

The WD My Book 3TB external hard drive, however, does indeed work at a much more economical 5400 RPM but has the added advantage of using a USB 3.0 connection which may not actually double the transfer speed since there are many other factors to consider but it does boost the speed of transfer from USB 2.0 with more than 50% on large file transfer. And since you won’t be using this drive to hold the major operation system it is unlikely that you will actually need those 7200 RPM because their usefulness really shows on quick access of small files. And since a 3TB external hard drive is a storage utility by any definition it will most likely hold those huge 720p or 1080p high definition movies.

Next up is the Seagate solution for the 3TB external hard drive conundrum and again we can see a clear shift in the experience of the buyers because most of them are choosing the Seagate Free Agent solution which is indeed meant to replace the old Seagate Expansion but because the Expansion is a much better looking device on the 2TB and 1TB market it is still in the lead. However the Free Agent does come with its own docking station capable of sustaining not only the USB 3.0 connection but more importantly, by using the proprietary Go Flex technology, it can use the FireWire 800 connection too. However there is no Seagate 3TB external hard drive that works at the 7200 RPM speed and that lives the door wide open for the Hitachi offer.

Because the Hitachi XL3000 3TB external hard drive is indeed the company’s latest external HDD technology’s product and still keep the 7200 RPM format. And that is great for two reasons: first of Hitachi have always been famous for their extremely reliable hard drives and the fact that they are sticking with the proven 7200 RPM technology shows they are still providing that old school level of quality. And the second reason is that because most computers today are not USB 3.0 ready they will much better benefit from the speed boost provided by the faster RPM then they could have with the new super-speed USB technology even if you chose to update your computer with a USB 3.0 adapter card.
